Chicago (CBS) — Flames engulf businesses on the Southwest side near Midway Airport overnight.
Heavy smoke and flames billowed from the roof of a two-story catering business on Central Avenue just one block north of 65th Street. The building was badly damaged.
Chicago police said no one was injured or evacuated in the fire.
Residents in the apartment next door will be woken up by sirens and may experience water damage in their homes. CBS 2’s Jackie Kostek spoke with a resident who smelled the smoke around 11:30 p.m., saw the flames and tried to wake the neighbors.
“That building is a total, total loss,” he said. “We have to overcome it. You have to go through it because that is life.”
A warming bath is available for local residents.
Kostek said Central Avenue is an “ice sheet.” This is because when temperatures drop below freezing, the water used to extinguish the fire freezes.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
This is a developing story.
