NEWTOWN, Ohio (WXIX) – A Newtown store was evacuated Thursday afternoon after an employee fell ill while opening a suspicious letter, the police chief said.
Chief Tom Cynan says he received the letters at the Village Post near Main and Debolt Streets.
The employee noticed the damaged package and took out the letter from inside.
Sinan said the letter, which contained vulgar language, had a strong and distinctive smell that burned the employee’s eyes and face.
Four people had to evacuate the company.
Chief Sinan says the employee who handled the letter has been checked out and will be fine.
According to U.S. Postal Inspectors, initial inspections did not show that there were any chemicals or gases in the letter, but further inspections are being conducted just in case.
One side of Main Street was closed as a precaution, but the road has since reopened.
