LAS VEGAS, NV (FOX5) – Catalytic converter thieves continue to cause expensive headaches for Las Vegas Valley residents. The latest robbery occurred at Camping World on Las Vegas Boulevard.
The business told FOX5 that someone stole 28 converters last week. He said it was one. He says his insurance will cover the repair, but he will have to pay a $1000 deductible.
Catalytic converters purify vehicle exhaust gases. Thieves will steal them in minutes and demand the expensive precious metals inside. Some metals are more valuable than gold.
People can buy metal plates to cover the catalytic converter to protect it. One company replacing his stolen RV catalytic converter in Las Vegas says the FOX5 uses a heavy-duty welded steel cage, which is very difficult to remove. You can also buy a sound-sensitive alarm that makes a loud bang, such as someone sawing an exhaust pipe to get a converter.
No word yet on the suspect in last week’s theft.
