Boston (WHDH) – Boston ranks as one of the worst cities in the world for traffic congestion, according to the annual Global Traffic Scorecard published by transportation data and analytics firm INRIX.
Data show that the typical Bostonian lost 134 hours in traffic jams in 2022. This is his 56 hours increase from 2021, but still he is 10% below pandemic levels. This congestion cost the average Boston driver his $2,270 last year.
Boston was only second to Chicago as the most crowded US city, and fourth in the world behind London and Paris. New York rounded out the top five in the world.
Boston saw a 13% increase in downtown trips compared to last year. Washington, DC saw the biggest increase with a 23% increase in downtown trips.
The biggest problem in Boston was the section of I-93 South from the tunnel to the junction. That leg also ranked his fourth busiest corridor in the nation.
