Out-of-conference play can present more noise than signal about what the team is and what it will become. Sometimes a slow start portends a struggle in the future, sometimes the team’s résumé is missing due to the randomness of college basketball, but there’s nothing to glean from it.
So when conference play starts, struggling teams have two options. They either continue to fall into mediocrity or get off the mat and get hot.
