North Carolina has been selected to host the 2029 FISU World University Games.
According to FISU (International University Sports Federation), the Games are the world’s largest event for student-athletes and second only to the Olympics.
The organization’s executive committee voted Tuesday to make the Triangle region the site of the Summer 2029 Games.
North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine Marshall called it a historic moment.
“The FISU World University Games is the largest event ever held in our state, welcoming athletes and fans from over 150 countries, as well as showcasing North Carolina, including our prestigious university. A unique opportunity for our great [state] We have to reach over 400 million viewers worldwide!” Marshall said in a press release issued by the North Carolina Bid Commission.
The 2023 Winter FISU Games will take place January 12-22, 2023 in the Lake Placid and Adirondack areas. It will be his first time in 51 years that the FISU Winter Games will be held in the United States, according to the NC Bidding Commission.
North Carolina lost an earlier bid to host the game in 2027.
