George Floyd’s family is ready to apply for a corporate grant funded by money from a wrongful death legal settlement with the city of Minneapolis.
Floyd, who was black, died in May 2020 after a white Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee into Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes. His family won his $27 million settlement from the city in March 2021, securing his $500,000 in grants to businesses in the neighborhood where Floyd died.

Attorney for the Floyd family, Ben Crump, said companies could start applying on Monday and continue applying until all funds have been distributed. Grants are awarded on a monetary basis, but larger grants may be considered.
