The European Commission hopes that the EES will replace the current passport stamping process. When it comes to identifying overstays, this has been considered slow and unreliable. However, officials hope this will speed up the process for travelers entering Europe.
The start of the EES system is scheduled for May 2023. Trials of this system have already begun in the Schengen area of Europe. Prague has already started registering passengers with “easykiosks”. These kiosks require tourists to complete a short questionnaire, give their fingerprints and take a picture to log into the system.
