Part of the Bitcoin code contains so-called difficulty adjustments every 2,016 blocks (approximately every two weeks). The size and direction of the adjustment will depend on the total computational power mining Bitcoin, and the goal is to ensure that block confirmations occur approximately every 10 minutes.
