NEW YORK. August 8, 2009. “Earlier today, a tragic accident occurred over the Hudson River when a small plane and a helicopter collided.
“In addition to its pilot, the tourist helicopter from Liberty Harbor Sightseeing Tours was carrying 5 Italian tourists eager to see the magnificent views of New York City from above. The small plane, which originated from Teterboro in New Jersey, was carrying three people including its pilot, one of whom is believed to be a child. At this time, a team of emergency workers and divers continues to search the site for the victims and aircrafts.
“The National Transit Safety Board will lead the investigation into the causes of the crash and is in route to Teterboro Airport to commence the investigation. We will await its report and recommendations as to whether additional safety measures can be taken to prevent future tragedies like the one we have sadly witnessed today.
“As we continue to monitor the progress of the recovery efforts, our hearts and prayers go out to the families of those who were on board each of these aircrafts – both here in New York and in Italy. What began as a beautiful day with blue skies has turned into a day of darkness for those who lost someone they love today.
“I want to thank Mayor Bloomberg, City and State emergency personnel for their swift response to this tragedy. We will work closely with law enforcement and aviation officials to give families, loved ones and the public updated information as it becomes available.”
