August 27, 2009. Two weeks after the death of his sister Eunice, Edward Moore “Ted” Kennedy (February 22, 1932 – August 25, 2009) has died of brain cancer at his home in Hyannis Port, Mass. He is survived by his wife Victoria, his sister Jean Kennedy Smith, and his three children.

All the facts of his life are on Wikipedia, good and bad. Many headlines and bi-lines deal with the sad and the sordid from the death of his brothers, “Bobby” and “Jack” to his involvement in the Chappaquiddick tragedy. But take those away and you still have one of the most influential politicians of his time. He truly was a Lion of the Senate. Many of the 300 plus bill he put forward were enacted into law. He was Chairman of and served on some of the most important influential Committees in the U.S. Senate. He was its second most senior member and the third longest serving member of all time.

From the cradle to the grave he was groomed for high office and although he was unsuccessful in his bid for his party’s nomination as Presidential Candidate in a political sense he never failed his party or the people. He was one of the few politician to grow stronger the more time passed. He was a man of great vision and principle. His support and endorsement of the presidential candidacy of Barak Obama, was pivotal in getting him elected.

In a letter/email to his supporters the President said that he “and Michelle were heartbroken to learn this morning of the death of (his) dear friend”.

He went on to say “In the United States Senate, I can think of no one who engendered greater respect or affection from members of both sides of the aisle. His seriousness of purpose was perpetually matched by humility, warmth and good cheer. He battled passionately on the Senate floor for the causes that he held dear and yet still maintained warm friendships across party lines. And that’s one reason he became not only one of the greatest senators of our time, but one of the most accomplished Americans ever to serve our democracy….Today, our country mourns. We say goodbye to a friend and a true leader who challenged us all to live out our noblest values. And we give thanks for his memory, which inspires us still“.

The body of Ted Kennedy will lie in repose at the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston Mass. A procession on Friday, August 28, will travel from the library to the Mission Church in Boston, where a funeral mass will be held. He will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery near the graves of his brothers.

A Political Giant is not an inappropriate description. He was respected by friend and foe alike. The world of American politics will be much the poorer for his passing.

The building, located next to the Ramada Continental hotel on Galadari Road, collapsed at around 4pm.

According to an eyewitness , who was in one in of the neighboring buildings, there was a tremor “like an earthquake” around 4pm as the building collapsed.

Early reports suggest no workers were inside the building at the time of collapse but a police office on the scene was unable to confirm this.

Eyewitness reports say that there are numerous ambulances, CID vehicles and representatives from Dubai Municipality on site.

Their son Cameron, aged 30, has been arrested in New York after allegedly violating the terms of his home detention by asking his girlfriend Kelly Sott to smuggle him in seven grams of heroin concealed in the battery compartment of an electric toothbrush. It seems that a private security company was watching him when his girlfriend Kelly Sott brought him the toothbrush and they contacted the authorities who arrested the two of them. Sott denies all knowledge of the presence of the drugs.

This is not his first brush with the law. He was arrested in California in 2007 for possession of a controlled substance when liquid cocaine was discovered in the car he was traveling in.

August 8, 2009.  General Motors Co. plans to register 3.5 billion shares of stock to ready itself for a public offering sometime next year, using the proceeds to repay at least part of what it owes the U.S. government and other stakeholders.

GM disclosed in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday that it would register 2.5 billion common and 1 billion preferred shares in preparation for the public sale. Its executives and the government have said they expect the sale sometime in 2010, but no date has been disclosed.

Spokeswoman Julie Gibson said the company is merely authorizing 3.5 billion shares but likely would not sell that high of a number in an initial public offering. It is common practice, she said, for companies to register more shares than they issue.

Current GM stakeholders include the U.S. government, which now owns 61 percent of the Detroit Company. So far GM has received $50 billion in U.S. government aid, some of which is to be repaid with the stock sale.

GM emerged from bankruptcy court on July 10 after a lightning-quick 40-day stay, cleansed of much of its debt and burdensome contracts. Its good assets were sold to a new company.

Just before it filed for bankruptcy protection, GM had about 611 million shares outstanding, but those shares stayed with the old GM, which now is mainly a collection of debt as well as closed plants and bad assets waiting to be liquidated.

The company also disclosed Friday that it would not report second-quarter earnings this year, but it will disclose its performance for the three- and nine-month periods before Sept. 30. Those reports will come after the third quarter closes, and the company says they will not comply with general U.S. accounting principles.

GM Statement Regarding the Filing of General Motors Company’s Current Report on Form 8-K

General Motors Company (GM) today filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) a Form 8-K with details on a number of matters that have occurred since the new company launched on July 10, 2009 as well as a comprehensive review of the business. GM agreed to provide this qualitative, non-financial information as part of its understanding with the SEC regarding the company’s filing requirements and those of Motors Liquidation Company (formerly General Motors Corporation), which sold substantially all of its assets to GM.

Some of the information filed today includes:

  • information on ownership structure, corporate governance, directors and executive officers and previously disclosed compensation details for 2008 and 2009 as filed with the SEC by Motors Liquidation Company under the name General Motors Corporation on March 5, 2009 and for 2009 by GM on July 16, 2009
  • description of securities and warrants
  • significant operational and financial agreements and related exhibits
  • risk factors and regulatory issues that may affect GM’s operations

“Today’s disclosures are consistent with our commitment to remain transparent and to keep the public informed of our progress,” said Fritz Henderson, GM president and CEO.

Although GM is a private company and not subject to the same filing requirements as publicly held companies under the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, the company will continue to file certain information with the SEC about material business matters as well as provide certain disclosures about the company’s financial status and key indicators of the company’s progress.

Upon the completion of the third quarter 2009 and finalization of GM’s accounting records, the new company will file a Form 8-K with quarterly information for the three- and nine-month periods ending September 30, 2009. The financial and related information will be consistent with information used by management to assess operating results for the period but will not comply with GAAP, as it will not incorporate “fresh start” accounting and other adjustments related to the recently concluded 363 sale.

In 2010 GM plans to file a fully compliant Form 10 to register its common stock under Section 12 of the Exchange Act, as well as fully compliant Forms 10-Q and 10-K, including GAAP compliant financials, for the periods ending September 30, 2009 and December 31, 2009 respectively.

GM strives to ensure that all of the information contained in a press release is accurate at the time it is issued.

Spokeswoman Renee Rashid-Merem said GM won’t file the second-quarter earnings because of the extensive work still needed to set up the books for the new company. The new company also needs to finish accounting changes made necessary by selling its good assets to the new company.

TOKYO. August 9, 2009. A 7.1 magnitude earthquake beneath the Pacific Ocean off the southeastern coast of Japan has shaken the highly populated areas of Honshu.

It occurred on Sunday, August 9 at 7:55 PM local time.

The USGS “Did you feel it?” map has many reports of IV intensity near Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka. A damaging tsunami was not generated and early news reports do not indicate widespread injuries or significant damage.

August 8, 2009. Nine people are believed to have been killed after a private plane and a tourist helicopter collided in mid-air above the Hudson River off Lower Manhattan on Saturday.

The crash happened just before noon EDT, across pier 40. It involved a Piper PA-32 plane, which is a fixed wing single-engine plane, and a Eurocopter helicopter belonging to Liberty Tours.

According to Mayor Bloomberg, the plane was carrying a pilot and two passengers. The helicopter was carrying a total of six people, five of whom were Italian tourists. He described the mid-air collision as “not survivable.” One of the tourists was a child, but his or her age was not immediately known.

The plane, which was manufactured in 1976, was registered to LCA Partnership from Fort Washington in Pennsylvania. It took off from Teterboro Airport in Teaneck, New Jersey shortly before noon, said Laura Brown, who is a spokeswoman for the FAA.

The Liberty Tours helicopter was believed to be either taking off or landing at a heliport on 14 Street, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Coast Guard said. She said the airframe of the plane has been recovered.

Officials describe the emergency response as “multi-agency”. Rescue workers from the New York City Police Department, New York City Fire Department, the Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Coast Guard are among the agencies responding.

The Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash and is en-route to the crash site.

UAL will move its massive operations center out of its former headquarters in Elk Grove.

It was reported Wednesday that UAL executives said the decision was driven by economics, because the airline would have to spend $50 million to upgrade the Elk Grove Township operations center.

Alderman Robert Fioretti (2nd) confirmed UAL was seeking $25 million in TIF funding and said the mayor’s office was planning a formal announcement for Thursday.

August 3, 2009. Three strong earthquakes struck off of Baja California in Mexico just minutes apart on Monday afternoon.

The first earthquake struck about 68 miles northeast of Santa Isabel in Mexico, according to the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center. The tremor struck at 1.55 p.m. EDT, following by a second earthquake at 2 p.m. EDT. The second earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.9, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. The quakes were located about 9 miles deep, which makes it a shallow earthquake. Shallow earthquakes tend to cause more severe damage than deeper earthquakes.

Although no tsunami warnings were immediately issued, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned there is a risk of local tsunamis. “Earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a few hundred kilometers of the earthquake epicenter,” a statement from the agency said. “Authorities in the region of the epicenter should be aware of this possibility and take appropriate action.”

The agency added to say that, if no tsunami waves have been observed near the epicenter within an hour of the earthquake, around 3 p.m. EDT, that the danger has passed.

There was no immediate word on damage or casualties from the earthquakes. People from Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Diego reported feeling the earthquakes.
