TOKYO. August 9, 2009. A 7.1 magnitude earthquake beneath the Pacific Ocean off the southeastern coast of Japan has shaken the highly populated areas of Honshu.

It occurred on Sunday, August 9 at 7:55 PM local time.

The USGS “Did you feel it?” map has many reports of IV intensity near Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka. A damaging tsunami was not generated and early news reports do not indicate widespread injuries or significant damage.

A strong earthquake hit just off the coast of Taiwan at 2:05 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center puts the magnitude of the earthquake off Taiwan at 6.4 and just 3 miles deep

Initial reports from the island said buildings swayed in most parts of the island and people were shaken from their beds. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

Ryanair, the low-cost carrier airline based in Dublin, Ireland, and Spring Airlines, another low-fare airline, headquartered in Shanghai, China,  are both contemplating this method of increasing passenger capacity.

Airline passengers in the United States are unlikely to be allowed to fly with this “Standing Room Only” model since the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the agency which regulates air travel in the country, stipulates that all air passengers above the age of 2 has to have a seat.

For  frequent fliers, it may give a different meaning to passengers flying “Stand By”.

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.4 has struck the Sumba region in eastern Indonesia.

No immediate word on casualties and damage  is available

No tsunami warnings have been issued.
